Our purpose
The after-school program providers industry facilitates youth programs beyond the traditional school day, offering activities in diverse locations such as schools, community centers, libraries, or parks. These programs encompass a wide array of activities, including sports, homework assistance, and avenues for creative expression.
In recent years, the participation of students in after-school activities has surged due to escalating demand, a significant portion of which remains unmet. Factors such as rising per capita disposable income and increased workforce participation among two and single-parent households have fueled this growth. Moreover, the expansion of after-school programs in high-need areas, augments the potential for further expansion.
Addressing the child obesity epidemic in America is of paramount importance. According to data from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, approximately 28% of Americans, totaling 80.2 million individuals aged six and older, lead physically inactive lifestyles. Children now spend an average of more than seven and a half hours per day in front of screens, contributing to sedentary behavior. Alarmingly, nearly 45% of children living in poverty are overweight or obese, compared to 22% of children from higher-income households.
In the context of New York City, home to the largest public school system in the United States, managed by the Department of Education with a budget of nearly $25 billion, the prevalence of childhood obesity is particularly concerning. Statistics indicate that one in five kindergarten students, one in four Head Start children, and nearly half of all elementary school children in New York City are obese.
These facts underscore the urgent need for comprehensive after-school programs that prioritize physical activity, nutrition education, and social-emotional well-being to combat the escalating rates of childhood obesity and promote healthier lifestyles among youth.
